ITV Tonight - Non Disclosure
I just watched this program on ITV Tonight and thought I'd write a few words as non-disclosure is a key area for us as IFAs. Firstly I'm very sorry for the insured people who's claims weren't successful - it must be extremely distressing to find out when you need insurance the most that it doesn't pay out.
In fact I've just had a call from a friend who's written her car off tonight - and been told that she doesn't qualify for a courtesy car, as hers doesn't need repairing!
So clearly when you're applying for insurance - be it life assurance, critical illness, or travel insurance you need to watch out for the small print - and you need to answer the questions as fully and honestly as possible. In fact that's pretty much all there is to it.
For example: If you've been to the doctor in the last 5 years and they've prescribed some medication whether or not you've taken it you would have to tick Yes to either of the following questions: "Have you been to the doctor in the last 5 years?" or "Have you been prescribed any medication in the last 5 years?"
This is such an important issue that we have several steps in our process to make sure we do everything we can to avoid a non-disclosure claim - Click here to read an article I wrote on this in 2008
You can no longer watch the program on ITV Player but there's a brief summary here ITV Tonight - You think You're Insured
